Saleh’s declaration

Saleh, who was Afghanistan’s Vice President since February 2020, announced on Tuesday that he is now the country’s acting president according to Afghanistan’s constitution after President Ghani’s escape. “According to the Constitution of Afghanistan, the Vice-President is the acting President in the event of the President’s absence, escape, resignation or death. At this time I am in my country and I am the legitimate Acting President.

He also said that the safety of Afghan citizens is of paramount importance and all leaders are being contacted to ensure this and build consensus on this. He made this tweet two days after the Taliban’s capture of Kabul. In a tweet a day earlier, he had warned Pakistan, “On our soil, with our people, for a cause and purpose, with a firm belief in the right move.” It is our legitimacy to oppose Pakistan-backed repression and brutal dictatorship. Saleh also said this week that it was useless to argue with the US president to defend his country.
