Ghislaine Maxwell ‘is told off by prison guards for not flushing her toilet’

Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged ‘madam’ for Jeffrey Epstein, has been told off for failing to flush her toilet and leaving her cell filthy by guards at the prison where she is being held, court documents have revealed.

Staff at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, noted that the British socialite ‘frequently did not flush her toilet after using it, which caused the cell to smell’, prosecutors said in a letter filed in federal court.

The document also revealed that Maxwell has been given the coronavirus vaccination while in custody and that she is ‘physically healthy’ after she complained last month that she has been held in ‘detrimental’ conditions.

Maxwell, 59, had claimed in a filing made by her lawyer that she was forced to drink dirty tap water and that a guard ‘physically abused’ her during a pat-down search while awaiting trial.

The new letter was signed by three Assistant US Attorneys – including Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey.

‘MDC staff directed the defendant to clean her cell because it had become very dirty,’ the letter reads.

It continues: ‘Among other things, MDC staff noted that the defendant frequently did not flush her toilet after using it, which caused the cell to smell.

‘In addition, the defendant had not cleaned her cell in some time, causing the cell to become increasingly dirty. MDC staff directed the defendant to clean her cell in response to the smell and the dirtiness, not as retaliation for complaining about a particular search’.

The rest of the letter sets out to debunk all the claims made by Maxwell’s lawyers, who claimed last week that her treatment would be appropriate for Hannibal Lecter, the fictional serial killer in The Silence of the Lambs.

Defense attorney Bobbi Sternheim had written in a letter to U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan that, because of conditions at the prison, Maxwell ‘is withering to a shell of her former self—losing weight, losing hair, and losing her ability to concentrate.’

Sternheim alleged Maxwell is losing weight because she is not being fed properly and that she is being woken up every 15 minutes by a flashlight.

The letter says that MDC staff have ‘not observed the defendant experience any noticeable hair loss’ despite what her lawyers have said.

Maxwell’s weight has fluctuated between 133lbs and 137lbs which means that even her lowest weight gives her a BMI of 20.8 which is considered ‘regular’ for a person who is 5′ 7′ tall.

‘Most recently, when the defendant was weighed last week, her weight was 137.5 pounds,’ the letter reads.

The letter admits that the tap water may run brown for a few seconds when engineers from the city of New York have been doing maintenance nearby.

‘The tap water available in the MDC is provided by New York City. As a result, on occasions when the City has conducted maintenance near the MDC, the water has been temporarily shut off,’ the letter reads.

On those days, inmates including Maxwell are given bottled water.

‘After the water is turned back on, the water is sometimes cloudy or brown and needs to run for several seconds before becoming clear,’ the letter reads.

The letter states that ‘MDC staff, including the permitido staff, drink the same tap water from the same water system as the defendant while in the institution’.

Prosecutors refuted claims that Maxwell’s meals arrive cold, noting: ‘meals arrive in containers that are both microwavable and oven safe. Currently, the defendant’s meals are heated in a thermal oven.’

Comey denied that Maxwell had been strip searched and said that checks every 15 minutes with the flashlight involved shining the light on the ceiling so they could see Maxwell in her bed and ‘sufficiently to confirm that the defendant is breathing.’

Besides, Maxwell wears an eye mask and ‘regularly sleeps through these nighttime wellness checks’, the letter states.

Billionaire Epstein died in 2019 after he hanged himself in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.

In 2008, Epstein was convicted in Florida of procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

He was accused of raping dozens of young teen girls between 2002 and 2005. The girls were allegedly groomed by his associate Maxwell – who was charged in 2020 with crimes of enticement of minors and sex trafficking of underage girls.

She denies the allegations.

Epstein was arrested again in July 2019 on federal charges for sex trafficking in Florida and New York just a month before he died.

Maxwell has complained that body searches of her are invasive and in February alleged that one amounted to physical abuse.

The prosecutors said that the pat-down in question was recorded on camera and after reviewing the footage the MDC concluded the search had been ‘conducted appropriately and the defendant’s complaint about that incident was unfounded’.

Prosecutors said Maxwell receives five hours of video teleconference calls with her counsel every weekday ‘for a total of 25 hours of attorney VTC calls per week’ and ‘continues to receive more time to review discovery than any other inmate.’

The letter adds that Maxwell ‘has received a COVID-19 vaccine and is now fully vaccinated – in short, MDC medical staff assess that the defendant is physically healthy’.

Maxwell has been in prison since she was arrested in July last year and charged with allegedly enticing underage girls for Epstein to abuse. She is also charged with perjury in a separate civil case.

Last month she was hit with two new charges: sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of a minor. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
