Southampton: Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin says competition motivates him to perform at his best and will quit the day he feels his urge to improve himself is waning. Ashwin is known to be a thinking cricketer who always tries to find something new, something extra in his game. This attitude of his has been beneficial for his entire career.

Ashwin told the ICC (International Cricket Council) before the final of the World Test Championship being played between India and New Zealand here, ‘The beauty of Test cricket is that you always aspire to be ‘perfect’, but You can also derive happiness from excellence. That’s why I do this. I think whatever I have achieved so far in my career is because of this attitude, I never settle for anything, keep looking for improvement.

The Indian spinner said, ‘I would like to say again that if I do not like to do different things and I am not able to be patient or satisfied to try something new, then I cannot continue the game.’ This 34-year-old Chennai bowler has taken 409 wickets in Test cricket. He does not like to get involved in controversies but if teased, he does not shy away from responding with his performance.

I don’t celebrate victory as much as I should ideally because for me victory is just an event. I agree that this comes from the incorporation of planning and practice. He admitted that he does not like to talk much about his performance as it is his profession for him to play the game and excel in it. He said, ‘To be honest, I don’t really pay much attention to my performance. To be honest, I don’t like the fact that I am recognized for what reason. You are greatly admired in India but I am just a normal person who finds peace and happiness by playing sports.
