United Nations: India will take over the presidency of the UN Security Council on August 1 and is set to host special events in three key areas – maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti said in a video message on the eve of India’s presidency of the 15-nation powerful UN body, “It is a special honor for us to take over the Presidency of the Security Council in the same month.” This is the month in which we are celebrating our 75th Independence Day.

The first working day of India’s presidency will be on Monday, August 2 when Tirumurti will hold a mixed press conference at the UN Headquarters on the month-long Council’s programmes, meaning some people will be there while others can connect via video conference. According to the program released by the United Nations, Tirumurti will also provide details of work to the member countries of the United Nations which are not members of the council.

Tenure will last till December next year
India’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council began on January 1, 2021. August’s presidency will be India’s first presidency as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for a 2021-22 term. India will again preside over the council in the last month of its two-year term i.e. in December next year. During his presidency, India will organize three major high-level events in three broad areas – maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism.
