Sydney: The Australian team has been empowered by the return of the veteran as the selectors have announced a 15-man strong squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in UAE and Oman. Aaron Finch has been made the captain and he is currently recovering after undergoing knee surgery. At the same time, Steve Smith has recovered from an elbow injury and has been successful in making a place in the team.

Pat Cummins, David Warner, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Kane Richardson have also returned. All these players were not with the national team on the Bangladesh and West Indies tours. The selectors surprised the fans by preferring uncapped wicketkeeper batsman Josh Inglis over Alex Carey. Carey took charge of Australia in the ODI series on the West Indies tour. Inglis had a strong performance in the recently concluded T20 Blast in England. He was the highest run scorer in the group stage.

George Bailey’s statement

George Bailey, chairman of selectors, said: “We have some of the best players in the world and given their role, they can be successful against any team in the world based on experience.” Josh Inglis has done really well in white ball cricket recently and he was on our radar. He was one of the top run scorers in the Vitality Blast. He will bring flexibility in the batting order. He is a player whose future we are very excited about.

Leg spinner Mitchell Swepson has been named as the third spinner along with Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. Bailey said, ‘Swepson made an impact in the opportunities he got. With a lot of matches to be played at the World Cup venues, we feel the UAE pitch will slow down. In such a situation, Mitchell Swepson will open the option of spin.

38-year-old all-rounder became reserve player

Australia have selected Dan Christian, Daniel Sems and Nathan Ellis as reserve players. Alice recently took a hat-trick against Bangladesh. These three players will go to the T20 World Cup with Australia. Australia will start their campaign against South Africa on 23 October. Kangaroos will try to win the T20 World Cup title for the first time.
