New Delhi: Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi’s second bail application has been postponed, it has been adjourned till July 23, it may be noted that fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi had once again filed a bail plea in the Dominica High Court in the case of illegal entry into the country. Choksi has been denied relief in the same case on two earlier occasions.

Earlier in June, Choksi’s bail plea was rejected by the Dominican magistrate’s court. After this he had moved the Dominica High Court, the High Court had also refused to grant bail. On May 23, Choksi was allegedly abducted from Antigua and Barbuda and taken to Dominica.

Termed the claims of conspiracy as complete nonsense

Earlier, Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt had said that his government’s stand on the “mysterious” arrival of fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi, wanted in the Rs 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB), was very clear. According to Dominica News Online, Prime Minister Skerritt rubbished claims of conspiracy with the governments of Antigua and India as “complete nonsense”.

According to him, to say that the government of Dominica and the government of Antigua colluded with India in any way is complete nonsense. We don’t involve ourselves in that kind of activities, those practices, not at all. I mean, it’s absurd and we reject it. It is unfortunate that any gentleman would want to publicize this baseless claim which is before the courts.

Prime Minister Skerrit said a similar case had happened with Iranian-born Dominican citizenship holder and diplomat Alireza Zibhlat Monfared, who was wanted by the Iranian government on charges of embezzlement of billions of dollars. Monfared was arrested in the Dominican Republic in 2017 after a lengthy international search.
