New Delhi: France said on Wednesday that it was ending the obligation to wear masks outside and lifting the night curfew, as Covid infections decrease and the country’s vaccine campaign intensifies. Prime Minister Jean Casteux said the requirement for people to wear masks in most parts of the country would be removed from Thursday with some exceptions, while the Covid curfew would be ended 10 days earlier than planned on June 20.
Wearing of masks outside compulsorily and curfew was imposed on 30 October. There was also anger among people regarding the night curfew. “The health situation in our country is improving faster than we expected,” Castex told a news conference after the cabinet meeting. Masks will still be required on public transport, stadiums and other crowded places.
There has been a decline in new cases in France. The average daily number of new cases fell on Tuesday to 3200, France’s lowest level since August 2020.
