Gujarat: 194 crocodiles removed from lake near ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: In the last two years, 194 crocodiles were removed from the lake in view of the safety of the tourists coming to a lake near the ‘Statue of Unity’ in Narmada district of Gujarat. is. Panchmuli Lake is located near the 182 meter high statue of Sardar Vallabh Patel in Kevadiya which is a big center of attraction among tourists, but there are a large number of crocodiles in the lake, which can become a threat to the tourists.
Vikramsinh Gabhania, forest officer of Kevadia area, said, “In 2019-20 (October-March), we shifted 143 crocodiles from here. In 2020-21, 51 more crocodiles have been sent to two rescue centers in Gandhinagar and Godhra.

73 crocodiles released in Sardar Sarovar reservoir
He informed that 73 crocodiles rescued in 2019-20 were released in Sardar Sarovar Reservoir. Crocodiles retrieved from the lake were later sent to rescue centers at Godhra and Gandhinagar in Panchmahal district. “Around 60 traps have been laid to catch the crocodiles. The part of the lake in which seaplanes (aircraft take off and land) operate (between Ahmedabad to Kevadia), is completely safe.
Boating starts at Panchmuli Lake near Statue of Unity
According to the State Tourism Department, in 2019, Gujarat State Forest Development Corporation Limited (GSF DC) started boating in Panchmuli Lake near the Statue of Unity. A spokesman for the Statue of Unity authority said boating is a major tourist attraction in the area and is especially crowded during weekends.

The Statue of Unity is a monument dedicated to Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India and the first Home Minister, located in the Indian state of Gujarat. The then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the construction of this giant statue on 31 October 2013 on the occasion of Sardar Patel’s birthday. This monument is situated at a distance of 3.2 km from Sardar Sarovar Dam at a place called Sadhu Bet which is an island on the river Narmada.
