Port of Prince: A 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti’s coast on Saturday. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was 12 kilometers to the northeast in Saint Louis du Sud. At least 29 people died in the earthquake.
People in Port au Prince felt the tremors of the earthquake and came out on the streets in fear. Naomi Vernis, 34, who lives in Port au Prince, said the quake was so strong that I woke up and saw the bed shaking. Naomi said, ‘I woke up because of the earthquake and came out of my house without wearing shoes. I have seen the great earthquake of 2010, so I had no option but to run away. Later I remembered that my two children and my mother were inside the house. My neighbors went inside the house and brought them out. We ran towards the street.
Significantly, Haiti has also faced severe earthquakes and storms in the past. Haiti was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in 2018, killing more than a dozen people, while a massive 7.1-magnitude earthquake in 2010 killed nearly three lakh people and wreaked havoc in the nation’s capital. According to the National Hurricane Center, Cyclone Grace will reach Haiti late Monday night or Tuesday morning.
