Thiruvananthapuram : A bean-like figure seen in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Kochi in Kerala has raised many questions in the minds of experts. An underwater bean-shaped ‘island’-like structure seen in a Google Maps satellite image. Experts consider it to be an underwater structure because nothing like it has been seen in the ocean. This structure is said to be 7 km west of Kochi Port Gate.

According to a report in The News Minute, the Chellanam Karshika Tourism Development Society had written a letter to the authorities regarding this. People associated with it say that no change has been seen in the shape of this structure in the last four years. Based on the image of Google Map, its length has been estimated to be about 8 km and width is about 3.5 km.

More information from research

Experts from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) are now planning to investigate it, which will help to know what role it may play in the flow of water currents and coastal erosion.

According to KUFOS Vice Chancellor K Riji John, it is currently not clear what it is made of. It looks like any other underwater island in Google’s satellite imagery. Its shape is also distinctive. More information about this can be gathered only through studies. He also said that experts will be consulted about the possibilities of research in this direction.
