Jerusalem : Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated after a drone attack on an Israeli-managed tanker off the coast of Oman. Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said on Thursday that the military was “ready to take action against Iran.” The defense minister has described Iran as “a global and regional problem”. The Israeli defense minister’s statement comes amid escalating tensions in the region following the deadly drone attack on ‘MV Mercer Street’ last Thursday, Aljazeera reported. One civilian each from Britain and Romania was killed in this drone attack.
Two killed in tanker attack
Israel has said Iran was behind the attack on the tanker Mercer Street and has submitted “strong evidence” to its allies. The US and Britain have also blamed Iran for this attack on the tanker. These countries say that they will respond to this attack. However, Iran has rejected these allegations of Western countries. Tehran says it will “strongly respond if any other country attacks to harm its interests”.
Ready to fight on many fronts including Iran – Israel
In an interview with a local media website, Gantz was asked whether Israel was ready to attack Iran, the defense minister said, according to the report. Gantz told YNet that Israel is ready to deal with conflict on multiple fronts at once, and that includes Iran. “Iran is a global and regional problem. He is a challenge to Israel. We need to continue expanding our capabilities to face confrontation on multiple fronts because this is the future. There has been no response from Iran on this statement of Gantz.
‘Develop real understanding country’
On Wednesday, the commander-in-chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that countries (especially Israel) that threaten Iran must develop a real understanding of their defensive and offensive capabilities. Meanwhile, NATO spokesman Dylan White said the 30-nation organization has joined the US, UK and Romania in strongly condemning the recent deadly attack on MV Mercer Street off Oman. The EU condemned the attack and called for a comprehensive and independent investigation into the incident.
