New Delhi/Islamabad : 14 leaders of Jammu and Kashmir have been invited to attend an apex meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This meeting is to be held on June 24, about which many discussions have started. It is being linked to setting the roadmap for holding assembly elections there for the first time since Jammu and Kashmir was declared a union territory two years ago. In the midst of political discussions about it in India, there is anger in Pakistan about it.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, after inviting 14 leaders from Jammu and Kashmir for a meeting with the PM, said in a furious manner that Pakistan would oppose any move by India to bifurcate Kashmir and change its demography. Pakistan has raised this matter in other international forums including the United Nations Security Council. The President of the Security Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations have also been apprised of India’s possible steps.

This statement of Qureshi has come at a time when 14 leaders of Jammu and Kashmir have been invited for a meeting with PM Modi. The leaders of Jammu and Kashmir who have been invited for the meeting with PM Modi include four former chief ministers – National Conference’s Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti. Apart from this, four former Deputy Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir – Congress leader Tara Chand, People’s Conference leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig and BJP leaders Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta have also been invited to the meeting.

CPM leader Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, J&K Apni Party (JKAP) chief Altaf Bukhari, People’s Conference’s Sajjad Lone, J&K Congress chief GA Mir, BJP leader Ravindra Raina and Panthers Party leader Bhim Singh were also invited for the meeting. is. The leaders who have been invited for the meeting are from eight political parties – National Conference (NC), PDP, BJP, Congress, J&K Apni Party, CPM, People’s Conference and J&K National Panthers Party. The top meeting with PM Modi for which these leaders have been invited is scheduled to be held on June 24 at 3 PM at the Prime Minister’s residence.

Elections will be held in December/March!

It is worth mentioning here that the major decision regarding Jammu and Kashmir was taken by the Central Government on 5th August, 2019, when it was bifurcated into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, ending its special status. After this move of the Central Government, this will be the first such meeting of the Center with leaders of various parties here, in which Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other central leaders are also likely to participate. All the leaders have been asked to come with a Covid-19 negative certificate to attend the meeting.

Jammu and Kashmir is ruled by the Center since November 2018. Officials say that the central government is in favor of holding assembly elections here at the earliest. It is likely to happen in December this year or in March next year.
