New Delhi: The number of sparrows, often found outside homes, has stabilized in the country and their widespread presence in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has delighted bird lovers. A recent report by the Salem Ornithological Foundation (SOF) has claimed that at present, sparrow (Passar domesticus) numbers are stable across India and there is no need to take steps for their conservation. Sparrow is one of the most widely found species.

Educating people about the places where sparrows are found in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the report also raises awareness about the importance of citizen science initiatives like ‘eBird’. The number of sparrows does not appear to be uniform at the district level, as there is a lack of researchers collecting information related to birds in some districts.

Ganeswar S V, Founder-Director, SOF, said, “There are many big gaps in the eBird database that need to be filled. It is clear that more samples need to be collected. Bird watchers and nature lovers need more contribution to eBird.
