Nagaur : The mythological text Ramayana mentions Kumbhakaran, the younger brother of Ravana, who is said to have slept for six months a year. Now information has come to light about one such person in Nagaur, Rajasthan, about whom it is being told that he sleeps for 300 days out of 365 days in a year. The locals call him the Kumbhakaran of real life.

The man is 42-year-old Purkharam, a resident of Bhadwa village in Nagaur district, who is suffering from a rare disease called Axis Hypersomnia. While people are generally advised to sleep for six to eight hours a day, Purkharam sleeps continuously for 25 days. He was diagnosed with this rare disease 23 years ago. Because of this, he is able to run his shop only five days in a month.

Purkharam’s family members say that when he falls asleep, it is difficult to wake him up. When he had this problem in the initial days and his family members noticed about his excessive sleep, he also contacted the doctors. At that time he was sleeping 15 hours a day. The duration of sleep then increased to several hours and eventually to several days. Later his symptoms got so bad that he now sleeps for 20-25 days at a time.

Purkharam’s family members feed him while sleeping and also bathe him. Sometimes he falls asleep even during work. Despite treatment and excessive sleep, his body remains exhausted most of the time and productivity at work is almost zero. He also complained about other symptoms related to his condition such as severe headache. Purkharam’s wife Lichhami Devi and his mother Kanvari Devi are hopeful that he will recover soon and lead a normal life as before.
