New Delhi: Billionaire businessman and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson reached space aboard Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft. UK businessman Branson was among six crew members of Virgin Galactic’s ‘VSS Unity’, which was launched from New Mexico at 8 pm (IST). The spacecraft flew into space from the southern desert of New Mexico.
The ‘Unity 22’ mission is the 22nd flight test for VSS Unity and the company’s fourth crewed spaceflight. It is also the first to carry a full crew of two pilots and four mission specialists in the cabin, including the company’s founder. This is the fourth voyage to space for Virgin Galactic. After completing its fourth space flight, the spacecraft landed safely on the runway in New Mexico.

Describing his journey in space, Richard Branson called it an ‘experience of a lifetime’. It was a 1.5 hour flight. We have reached this height after 17 years of hard work. The spacecraft reached the edge of space at an altitude of about 53 miles (88 kilometers). All returned after feeling weightless for three to four minutes and seeing the sight of the earth. The spacecraft separated from its original aircraft after reaching an altitude of about 8 miles (13 km).

The crew also includes 34-year-old Shirisha Bandla, an aeronautical engineer. She is the third woman of Indian origin to go to space. Born in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district and raised in Hustum, Texas, Bandla will travel from New Mexico to the ends of space with Richard Branson and five other members of Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft Two Unity. She tweeted, “I am incredibly honored to be part of the amazing crew of Unity 22 and to be part of a company whose mission is to make space accessible to all.”

Branson’s aim is to promote space tourism, for which more than 600 people are already waiting. Virgin Galactic first launched into space in 2018.
