Kabul : A powerful explosion occurred on Tuesday in a posh area of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Many senior government officials, including the Defense Minister, live in this area. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the attack, but several small explosions as well as gunshots could be heard.
Home Minister Mirwais Stanikzai said the blast took place in the posh Sherpur area, a highly protected part of the capital known as the Green Zone. This is the first blast in the capital in recent times.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but it came as Taliban insurgents are moving forward with an offensive that is putting pressure on provincial capitals in the south and west of the country.
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for some recent attacks in Kabul, but no one has yet claimed responsibility for many. However, the government is blaming the Taliban and the Taliban is blaming the government.
