Colombo: The Indian limited-overs squad that toured Sri Lanka may have six players who do not have experience in playing international matches, but vice-captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar said being less experienced is not an issue and due to the Indian Premier League (IPL) the entire team has been spared. The team is full of confidence.
With skipper Virat Kohli and limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma in England for the Test series, India have sent a less experienced team led by opener Shikhar Dhawan to Sri Lanka. Devdutt Padikkal, Chetan Sakariya, Nitish Rana, Krishnappa Gautam, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Varun Chakraborty in the Indian team do not have the experience of playing international cricket, but all of them did well in the IPL, which earned them a place in the national team.
Bhuvneshwar said in an event of Star Sports, ‘We have good players and they have IPL experience. He may be young, but he has IPL experience. They have been playing in T20s for a long time and have done well for their teams. So it is a win-win situation for the team that they will come here to play with the confidence they get from IPL. They are young and talented. The team also has experienced players and it will be a good tour.
Bhuvi benefited from playing in domestic cricket
Bhuvneshwar said, “Young players who have come on their first tour and who have made it to the team by doing well in the IPL, if they perform well here, it will boost their morale a lot.”
The senior pacer was ruled out during last year’s IPL due to a hamstring strain and then missed the tour of Australia. He made a comeback in the limited overs series against England. Bhuvneshwar said, ‘When I was fully fit, domestic cricket was going on. So my focus was on staying fit and coming back and after that I started preparing for the matches.
