Southampton: England registered a massive 89-run victory in the third and final T20 International on Saturday to clean sweep Sri Lanka 3-0 in the three-match series. England batted first and scored 180 runs in the allotted 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets. In reply, Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 91 runs in 18.5 overs. This is Sri Lanka’s fourth lowest score in T20 International cricket history.
Great opening by Bairstow-Malan
Sri Lanka captain Kusal Perera won the toss and invited England to bat first. Openers Jonny Bairstow (51) and Man of the Match David Malan (76) got the hosts off to a great start with a 105-run partnership. Both added 105 runs in 70 balls. Isuru Udana broke the partnership with a clean bowling to Bairstow. Bairstow scored the seventh half-century of his T20 International career with the help of five fours and a six in 43 balls.
From the other end, David Malan continued his attacking style, but he did not get support from the other end. Binura Fernando gave England the second blow by getting Liam Livingstone (14) caught by Shanaka.
Chamira stops England with a big score
The way England started, it seemed that they would easily cross the 200-run mark. However, this did not happen. Dushmanth Chamira took wickets in the last over, bowling very economical and restricted England to 180 runs. Chamira made Sam Billings (2), Eoin Morgan (1), David Malan (76) and Moeen Ali (7). Chamira took 4 wickets for 17 runs in 4 overs. Udana and Fernando got one wicket each.
Sri Lankan batsmen surrender
The Sri Lankan team, chasing the target of 181 runs, was never seen in the match. Sri Lankan batsmen surrendered in front of England fast bowlers. The whole team could not even score 100 runs. Only three Sri Lankan batsmen Oshada Fernando (19), Niroshan Dickwella (11) and Binura Fernando (20) could score double numbers.
This is Sri Lanka’s fourth lowest score in T20 International cricket. Sri Lanka’s lowest score in T20 International cricket history was made against India in Visakhapatnam on 14 February 2016, when the entire team was all out for just 82 runs. Apart from this, the Sri Lankan team was all out for 87-87 runs on 9 May 2010 against Australia in Bridgetown and on 20 December 2017 against India in Cuttack.
