New Zealand’s World Test Championship winning (WTC) team captain Kane Williamson said a one-match (Test) final is thrilling but it doesn’t give the full picture of how strong Virat Kohli’s Indian team is in the rain-hit WTC final. New Zealand beat the Indian team by eight wickets. Williamson’s unbeaten half-century in the second innings of this match played in Southampton, the team easily achieved the target of 139 runs for victory.
“It (the final of a match) provides excitement,” Williamson told ‘India Today Channel’. But it never really tells the whole picture.
“We know this Indian team is a strong team. It’s a great team and we are proud to have won this match, but it doesn’t tell the fact how strong they are and what skills they have.
Williamson said, “There is no doubt that they will win a lot of matches. You know about their quality. They have a pace attack that is the best in the world, the spin bowler is unbelievable and the batting needs no mention.” Terming the Indian players as the great ambassadors of the game, Williamson said that among his fans there is a need for the national team. Kind of passion, that’s what they like.
“That country brings such a spirit to the sport that we can all appreciate India. Their passion also gets rewarded. They (players) position themselves as the messengers of the game.” Williamson said all three outcomes were possible on the last day of the match but the chances of a draw were high given the time constraints.
“It was a reality to expect every result and we were trying to do as much as we could. We haven’t been doing anything different for the last few days and just wanted to see how the game pans out when we get the opportunity.” Williamson conceded that the early dismissals of Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara made it a good opportunity for him. Gone.
“It was great to take wickets at the start of the last day, which made the result more likely on that day. After that the Indian team also retaliated and they also had a chance. The bowlers were getting help from the pitch. It was difficult for us.”
