Mumbai: It was an interesting twist of fate that led to Scottish kid Jacob Smith being cast in the recently released Mimi on Netflix and Jio Cinema, starring Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi in lead roles. Jacob is playing the role of Mimi’s son Raj in the film, produced by Dinesh Vijan and directed by Laxman Utekar.
In an interview, Jacob’s parents recalled how they got an offer to cast him in the film. A few years ago, a family of four came to Goa as a part of their ‘big crazy dream’ of traveling around the world, which included stops in Jordan and Albania. During this, Jacob was taken out of the ‘nursery’ class.
Jacob’s father Chris told BBC Scotland News: ‘We talked to him and one thing led to another and that’s how Jacob got a job in the film. They were looking for roles across India for six months, so we really didn’t think they would pick our son Jacob. They chose her because the director was watching her perform on the set, which was seriously impressive because she has sometimes been focused on one task for a long time!’
After the casting of Jacob, the family moved to Mumbai, where he was enrolled in an acting class and then to Rajasthan where Mimi was being shot. Jacob was three years old at the time. He is now five years old.
Jacob’s father said, ‘We felt somewhat nervous about whether it would be right to put our son in the spotlight. This was worrying us to an extent, but once we started talking to the production company, they managed to ease our concerns.
Jacob’s mother, Julie, said that the cast and crew cared for the child, and that they never envisioned him as a child artist. Julie said, ‘He learned the lines, but he’s a Scottish boy and in the film he plays an Indian boy, raised in Rajasthan, so they couldn’t use his real voice because he didn’t have that dialect. Is. He dubbed her voice in the end. But if you watch the movie, her lips work really well with the lines.’
Mimi was supposed to release on Friday, but then it was released on Monday. Officially, the team says that this was done for the initial release on the occasion of Kriti Sanon’s birthday.
