A target was set to provide LPG connections to five crore women members of BPL families
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch Ujjwala 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana-PMUY) on August 10 by handing over LPG connections in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh. During the program to be held through video conferencing, the Prime Minister will interact with the beneficiaries of Ujjwala Yojana and will also address the nation.
Describing the journey from Ujjwala 1.0 to Ujjwala 2.0, the release said that during Ujjwala 1.0, which started in 2016, a target was set to provide LPG connections to five crore women members of BPL households. Subsequently, the scheme was expanded in April 2018 to cover seven more categories of women beneficiaries: SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most Backward Classes, Tea Gardens, Forest Dwellers, Islanders. Also, the target was revised to eight crore LPG connections.
“This target was achieved in August 2019, seven months ahead of the due date,” the statement said. The provision of one crore additional LPG connections under the PMUY scheme was announced in the Union Budget for FY 21-22. These one crore additional PMUY connections (under Ujjwala 2.0) are aimed at providing deposit-free LPG connections to low-income households that could not be covered under the first phase of PMUY.
