  • WTC final to be played between India and New Zealand
  • The final is to start in Southampton on Friday, 18 June.
  • The first day’s play has not started due to rain.

Rain affected the first day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand. No play took place in the first session of the day on Friday. India announced their playing XI on Thursday itself, which includes two spinners (Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin) and three fast bowlers (Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma). However, due to the disruption of rain, many believe that skipper Virat Kohli’s mood regarding India’s playing XI may change before the final toss. Former India batsman and captain Sunil Gavaskar also feels that there may be a change in India’s playing XI.

Sunil Gavaskar said this big thing

Heavy rain in Southampton means groundsmen will find it difficult to cut the grass. If there is a lot of grass on the pitch, then it will help the fast bowlers. In such a situation, Sunil Gavaskar has said a big thing. He hopes that before the toss, Team India can change its playing XI and only one spinner can be given a chance. At the same time, a batsman can play extra. Gavaskar told Aaj Tak, ‘India may have announced the team on Thursday, but nothing is decided until the captain shares the sheet during the toss. You can change the team at the last moment too.

‘Rishabh Pant can play at number seven’

He further said, ‘When as a captain I was confused whether to give a spinner or an extra batsman, I used to look at the opposition team’s playing XI just before the toss and change my team on paper.’ Gavaskar said, “The playing XI can be changed anytime before the toss. So I think maybe India will think of keeping another batsman in the team because of the weather. Actually, these conditions are suitable for New Zealand fast bowlers. In such a situation, Rishabh Pant can play at number seven instead of six and a batsman can come in the team. Depending on the weather, a spinner can be dropped from the playing XI.
