Kabul: With the withdrawal of American and NATO forces from Afghanistan, the dominance of the Taliban is increasing here. After capturing the country’s third largest city Herat on Thursday, the Taliban have now claimed to have captured the country’s second largest city Kandahar. This is considered to be the biggest success for the Taliban and it is being said that soon they will also take Kabul under their control.

According to the news agency AFP, a Taliban spokesman said in a tweet, ‘Kandahar has been completely won. Mujahideen have reached Shaheed Chowk in the city. After this occupation of the Taliban, now the Ashraf Ghani government has only control of Kabul and other small areas and the speed with which the Taliban is progressing, it is clear that in the coming days, only Taliban will rule over Afghanistan.

On Thursday, the US Department of Defense Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced that the US Department of Defense would send troops to Afghanistan to evacuate embassy staff from Kabul. “In the next 24-48 hours, 3 infantry battalions will be sent to the Kabul airport. The number of these soldiers is about 3,000. These are being deployed for the orderly and safe return of civilian personnel. This is a temporary mission. Our commanders have an inherent right of self-defense and can retaliate strongly to any attack on them.

Foreign forces are returning

US and NATO troops came to Afghanistan about 20 years ago and overthrew the Taliban government. Now a few weeks before the full withdrawal of American forces, the Taliban have increased activities. There is no direct threat to Kabul at the moment, but the Taliban’s hold on about two-thirds of the country appears to be tightening. Thousands of people have left their homes because they fear the repressive Taliban rule may come again.
