Aizawl : It has been more than 36 hours since Mizoram’s Jeonghaka alias Jeon-e, considered the head of the world’s largest family, breathed his last, but his loved ones are not ready to say goodbye to him. Because they claim that he is still alive.

In Baktang village, 76-year-old Jeonghaka has 39 wives, more than 90 children and at least 33 grandchildren, who live in a sprawling four-story house. They belong to the Lalpa Kohran Thar, a religious sect that allows polygamy for males.

Jion-A, who was suffering from hypertension and diabetes, was declared brought dead by doctors at Trinity Hospital in Aizawl on Sunday. However, the family members insisted that his body was warm and his pulse was still going.

Jatinkhuma, secretary of Lalpa Kohran Thar, said that after being brought home from the hospital, Jion’s pulse started running again. He said, ‘His (Jion-e) body is still hot. His family members and the people of Chuanthar of Baktang village cannot bury him under such circumstances.

According to Ramjuwa, president of the Chuanthar Village Council, more than 2,500 members from 433 families are part of the sect, which was founded by Jeon-e’s uncle some 70 years ago. Most of the members of the sect work as carpenters for a living.

“They all have great respect for him, and will not want to perform his last rites until they are convinced that he has left this world,” Ramjuwa said.

CM expressed his condolences

Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Sunday expressed his condolences over Jion-A’s death, and tweeted, “With a heavy heart, Mizoram congratulates Mr. Jion-A (76), who is considered the head of the world’s largest family. Farewell… May his soul rest in peace.’

State Congress President Lal Thanhawla and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma among others also condoled his death. Jeon-e’s four-storey mansion in Baktang is a major tourist destination.
