New Delhi : China is developing a new airbase in the city of Shake in Xinjiang province, which is near eastern Ladakh, in an attempt to address the problems associated with operating its fighter jets along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India.

News agency ANI quoted government sources as saying, ‘This new air base is being built between the existing airbase of Kashgar and Hogan. From Kashgar and Hogan airbases, China has been running fighter jet operations on Indian borders for a long time. The new air base, now being prepared for combat operations, will prove to be more helpful to the Chinese Air Force in the region.

Upgrades being done for fighter planes

According to sources, there is already an airbase in the city of Shake and it is being upgraded to operate fighter jets. It will soon be ready for the operations of fighter aircraft. Work on this has been expedited.

The distance between existing airports in China close to the LAC for operating fighter jets is around 400 kms, but Shaqche airfield will help bridge this distance once operations begin.
