Covishield

The Kovid-19 vaccine was developed by Oxford University in partnership with British-Swedish firm AstraZeneca. It is being manufactured in India by the Serum Institute of India (SII) based in Pune. Covishield is based on Viral Vector Platform. The vaccine is made from a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus) that causes infection in chimpanzees. It has been modified to look like a coronavirus, although it cannot cause a disease. The injected virus instructs the body to fight off the same virus.

The Covishield vaccination course consists of two separate doses of 0.5 ml each. According to the latest guidelines of the Union Health Ministry, the second dose should be given between 12-16 weeks after the first dose. The Center has allowed students traveling abroad for education to receive a second dose within a span of 28 days. The Covishield vaccine is available free of charge to all adults in government centers and on a paid basis in private hospitals. Kovishield is being given free of cost at government immunization centers, while in private hospitals the price has been kept at Rs 780. This includes Rs 150 in GST. Covishield is not yet authorized for use in children in India. This is an impressive 82 percent.

Covaxin

Covaccine is an indigenous vaccine developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Virology, Pune (NIV). Covaccine is an inactivated vaccine, which means it is made from killed coronaviruses, which they are unable to infect or replicate. Once injected, human cells recognize the dead virus, prompting the immune system to make antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Covaccine is given in two doses spaced 28 days or four weeks apart. Covaccine is not yet available for retail and is being given to all adults on a paid basis at government centers and in private hospitals. Covaccine is being given free of cost at government immunization centers while its maximum price has been kept at Rs 1,410 in private hospitals. This includes Rs 150 in GST. Bharat Biotech is currently testing Covaxin on children aged 2-18 years. This is an impressive 81 percent.

SPUTNIK V

The Sputnik V vaccine has been developed by the Gamleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow, Russia, in partnership with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). It is being distributed in India by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories based in Hyderabad. RDIF has tied up with other Indian companies – Hetero Biopharma, Gland Pharma, Stellis Biopharma and Vircho Biotech for its production. Like Covishield, Sputnik V is a viral vector vaccine. However, the Sputnik V vaccine uses two human recombinant adenovirus vectors for its two doses, which are intended to provide longer protection. The vaccine provides a code for making the corona virus spike protein. Thus, when the real virus enters the body, it triggers an immune response in the form of antibodies. Sputnik V vaccine is given in two doses at 21 days apart. Currently, Sputnik V is not available at government-run centres. Dr Reddy’s has partnered with leading hospitals across the country in hospitals like Apollo, Medanta, Fortis Healthcare. The central government has fixed the price of this vaccine at Rs 1,145 per dose including GST. Sputnik V Vaccine 91.6 is effective. Sputnik V is not yet authorized for use in children in India.

Moderna

The COVID-19 vaccine, also known as SpikeVax. It has been developed by Massachusetts-based Modern Therapeutics in collaboration with the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The modern vaccine uses mRNA or messenger RNA technology. The vaccine contains genetic instructions for our cells to make the SARS-Cov-2 spike protein. Once injected, the vaccine instructs cells to make a copy of the spike protein. This prompts the immune cells to make spike proteins and antibodies to fight the virus. Moderna Vaccine is administered in two doses (100 micrograms, 0.5 ml each) spaced 28 days apart.

Moderna Vaccine has been shown to have an efficacy of 94.1% in protecting against COVID-19 starting 14 days after the first dose. Moderna also states that its vaccine is 100 percent effective for adolescents aged 12-17 years. The price of Moderna Vaccine in India has not been decided yet. Moderna has committed to donating the first batch of vaccines. In the US, the vaccine costs $15 per dose (Rs 1,114), while in EU countries it costs $18 (Rs 1,337). Drug manufacturer Cipla is importing Moderna Vaccine. The Center will provide the doses directly to the states and will be available in some of the major government hospitals. The timeline for the availability of Moderna Vaccine is not yet clear.

Johnson & Johnson

The Johnson Kovid-19 vaccine is developed by Jensen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of American pharma giant Johnson & Johnson. The vaccine will be brought to India through a supply agreement with Hyderabad-based firm Biological E Ltd. Johnson & Johnson Vaccine is a viral vector vaccine made by Oxford-AstraZeneca. The vaccine uses a modified adenovirus to deploy the “spike protein” of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into human cells, which boosts immunity. While the Oxford vaccine uses a genetically engineered chimpanzee adenovirus, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a variant of a human adenovirus known as AD26. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a single-shot vaccine and is administered into a muscle. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is likely to be first available at government-run immunization centers, as only a limited dose will be available initially. The timeline for the availability of the vaccine is not yet clear. This vaccine is 85 percent effective. The price of Johnson & Johnson Vaccine in India has not been decided yet. In the United States, the vaccine costs $10.
