How did you get the character of Hanif in State of Siege?
‘At that time the lockdown was opening, only then I got a call that the film State of Siege is being made. You deserve a role in this. I was told about my character. After that I had my screen test. After that I was asked to gain weight. In about three months, I had gained up to 10 kg. It was mostly muscle weight. Although everyone works hard in the gym, the most important thing is to get to the root of the character.

‘I am very cheerful in real life. In such a situation, it was very difficult for me to play such a character. I had to work hard for this. Because when you are playing the role of a terrorist then people should realize that you have the same mentality as that of a terrorist. People may think that he thinks like a terrorist, but in real life you do not think so.

I've no fears to be stereotyped

This type of character also affects the personal life of the actor. Did something like this happen to you?
‘Yes, there is such a danger. But, no, nothing like this happened to me. I had already decided that cruelty should only be visible on camera. For this I used some technique. I trained my mind in such a way that that character does not dominate my personal life. However, it was very difficult.

Did you hear or read about the 2002 Akshardham temple attack before this film?
‘I had heard a little. However, I didn’t do much research on it. When I was offered this film, I did research about it. However, a lot of fiction has been shown in the film. Apart from this, I am from army background so it helped me to know.

The shooting of the tenth film is going to be over soon. My character in this film is very different from the previous film. It is a light and light mood film. At the same time, working with Abhishek Bachchan and Nimrat Kaur was a great experience. They never let me realize that I am still new in the industry.

‘I come from village Barnala in Punjab. No one in my entire family thought of becoming an actor. I had thought from the time of school that I have to go in the field of art only. I used to sing songs in school. During college, I started doing theater. I wanted to be an actor who sings songs too.

What was your family’s reaction to your decision to become an actor?
‘My father used to do a government job. In such a situation, he also wanted me to do a government job. He didn’t want me to become an actor. He used to say that through a government job one would get a government house. I have studied a lot.

‘I am the first post graduate in my entire family. After doing mass com, I worked as a radio jockey. After that I was a part of Mughal-e-Azam play. Today my father is happy to become an actor.
