- Along with Jeff Bezos, other people will also go on a space journey.
- Bezos’ space journey will be of 11 minutes.
- They will go up to a height of more than 100 km.
When Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket takes off from the aerospace outfit’s launch site near Van Horn, Texas, it will be carrying former Amazon CEO and one of the world’s richest men, Jeff Bezos. Bezos’ journey into space marks the fulfillment of his life-long dream and what he had dreamed of as a child. When Neil Armstrong first set his feet on the moon in July 1969, Bezos was amazed to see that scene. This visit of Jeff Bezos will take place at 5 pm Indian time.
Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000, and the company has been testing prototypes of its New Shepard craft for more than a decade since then. Reportedly, it has sent 15 successful test flights, but the latest launch will be the first with a manned crew. The company is one of several other ventures in the private space industry, finding itself in direct competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic. New Shepard’s first crewed mission to space comes days after Branson traveled to space aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo on July 11.
Who will accompany Bezos on space travel?
Like Branson, Bezos will not be alone in this 11-minute journey. He will be accompanied by his 53-year-old younger brother, Mark Bezos, 82-year-old aviation pioneer, Wally Funk, and 18-year-old Oliver Damon. Funk, one of the ‘Mercury 13’ cohort – a group of women qualified to be NASA astronauts but never had the opportunity to go to space. She will become the oldest human to reach space. Over the course of an illustrious career, Funk has broken many glass ceilings, previously serving as the first female civilian flight instructor at the Army’s Fort Sill, the first female Federal Aviation Administration flight inspector, and the first female National Transportation Safety Board air safety investigator Have done Damon, on the other hand, was added last-minute to the New Shepard crew after an unidentified man who originally won a $28 million seat on the Rocket withdrew ‘due to a scheduling dispute’.

Standing 60 feet tall, the New Shepard features a reusable rocket booster and capsule, powered by a liquid-fueled BE-3 engine. Which reportedly generates 110,000-pound-feet of thrust (at sea level). Capable of carrying up to six passengers, the capsule requires no pilot and is equipped with a climate control system and an escape motor. About 20 minutes after the crew boarded the capsule, Blue Origin’s mission control would give a green signal to the launch, prompting the rocket to fire its engines. During its ascent, New Shepard will reach speeds exceeding three times the speed of sound, after which the capsule will separate from the booster.
The capsule will reportedly reach an altitude of over 340,000 feet (100 km). The threshold representing the boundary of space and commonly referred to as the Karman line. The crew will then find themselves in a microgravity environment for a few minutes before pulling themselves back to their seats as the capsule enters free-fall mode. There will be a chance to roam in space for some time, during which there will also be gravity weightlessness. Then the space capsule will take Bezos towards Earth. The parachute would then open, and as it reached the ground, the capsule’s thrusters would burn to soften the impact upon landing. Will land safely. In this way, Bezos will also break the record of Richard Bezos of Virgin Galactic in reaching the height of space.
