Moderna’s Protein Based COVID Vaccine
New YorkThis claim has been made in a research on baby rhesus macaques. The study by a team of scientists from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian reported that both vaccines produced strong neutralizing antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 with baby rhesus macaques. Received responses, the virus that causes COVID-19. It found that the antibody responses persisted for up to 22 weeks.
The research, published in the journal Science Immunology, suggests that vaccines for young children are important and safe tools to reduce the epidemic. We have seen that the production of potent antibodies, said Christina de Paris, professor of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine. Levels were observed in adult macaques, even though the dose remained 30 micrograms instead of the 100 microgram adult dose.
He said, with the Moderna vaccine, we also observed specific robust T cell responses, which we know are important for limiting disease severity. To evaluate SARS-CoV-2 infant vaccination, the researchers used Vaccinated two groups of 8 baby rhesus macaques at 2.2 months of age and 4 weeks later.
Each animal received one of two vaccine types
Each animal received one of two vaccine types, including a preclinical version of the Moderna mRNA vaccine, or a protein-based vaccine from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research, a part of the National Institutes of Health. It is a protein-based vaccine developed by the Centre.

Both vaccines elicited high amounts of IgG neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and spike protein-specific T cell responses – IL-17, IFN- and TNF. These are called T helper 1 immune responses. Importantly, the vaccine did not elicit T helper type 2 responses, which could be detrimental to the efficacy and safety of the vaccine in infants.
