Baghdad: US forces shot down an armed drone over its embassy in Baghdad on Monday night. A few hours earlier, a rocket attack was carried out on a base of American troops in the west of Iraq. Iraqi military forces have confirmed that the US defense system in Baghdad shot down an explosives-laden drone hovering over the embassy.
There have been 47 attacks on US installations in Iraq since the beginning of this year, where 2,500 US troops have been deployed as part of an international coalition to fight the jihadist Islamic State group. The attacks on US interests so far have involved six drone strikes, which remain a challenge for coalition forces.
Drone attacks become a challenge
Drones are not easily caught and sometimes even escape from the air defense system. In such a situation, the security forces remain concerned about it. In April this year also, a drone loaded with explosives attacked the Iraq headquarters of the coalition forces, which is in the Kurdish region of Iraq. The very next month, a drone loaded with explosives attacked the Ain al-Assad airbase of American troops.
Later on June 9, three explosive-laden drones targeted the Baghdad airport, where US troops are also stationed. One was killed by Iraqi forces. Concerned about drone strikes, the US has also offered a $30 reward for those who provide information about recent attacks targeting its bases in Iraq.
Coalition forces also said that three rockets were fired on Monday on an Iraqi airbase in the Western Desert, where American troops are located.
