State Bank of India (SBI) India’s largest state-owned bank in India, claims to serve a huge customer base of 420 million in the country. Due to the large number of users, the bank regularly shares security updates with its customers to help them identify potential phishing, hacking or fraud attempts against their bank accounts and financial well-being.

All banks regularly send text messages to their customers to inform them about changes, policies, account balance etc. However, there have been several cases of eavesdropping of text messages and defrauding sensitive bank customers through sensitive information.

Recently, SBI shared tips to find out whether the messages received by the customers are sent by the bank itself. The official Twitter handle of SBI tweeted that before letting anyone in, always check who is behind the door.

It said that SBI customers should always check shortcodes starting with “SBI/SB”, for example SBIBNK, SBIINB, SBIPSG and SBINO, the bank further alerted its account holders and other customers that on messages from unknown sources Don’t give any feedback.

SBI also told ways to keep its customers safe from any hacking, phishing, social engineering or scams. Know what to do and what not to do:-

1. Access your bank website by simply typing the URL in the address bar of your browser.
2. Be aware of downloading any malicious applications from mobile application stores (Google Playstore, Apple App Store, Blackberry App World, Ovi Store, Windows Marketplace etc.) that offer online banking.
3. Check their authenticity by contacting your bank before downloading.
4. DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS IN ANY E-MAIL MESSAGE TO ACCESS THE SITE.
5. SBI or any of its representative never calls you over email, SMS or phone to receive your personal information, password or One Time SMS (High Security) Password.
6. Any such e-mail, SMS or phone call is an attempt to fraudulently withdraw money from your account through Internet Banking.
7. Never respond to such emails/SMS or phone calls.
8. If you receive any such e-mail/SMS or phone call, please report dot phishing immediately to sbi.in.
9. If you have accidentally disclosed your credentials, please lock your user access immediately.
