Watching the World Test Championship (WTC) final, former captain Brendon McCullum feared that New Zealand would not be able to win the world title despite getting close once again. McCullum’s delight, however, knew no bounds when Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor chased down goals against India to help New Zealand win their first World Test Championship title.

New Zealand picked up the first WTC mace after beating India by eight wickets in a rain-hit match in Southampton on Wednesday. McCullum is thrilled that the team won its first world title in the traditional format. “He has had a wonderful journey over the years and he has come so close to tasting the highest success,” McCullum told ‘Sen Radio’.

“It’s great to do this in the top format of the game. To be honest, I still haven’t recovered from this feeling.” McCullum said, “The match was very close on the night but it was missing the last two World Cups when we got closer but could not win After India were bundled out for 170 in the second innings, New Zealand chased down the target of 139 for the loss of two wickets thanks to unbeaten knocks from skipper Williamson (52) and veteran Ross Taylor (47).

McCullum said, “It is wonderful to get this result against the weather and a very strong Indian team. I’m sure we’ll look back on this moment for days and weeks or even years to come and be proud of what the Kane team has achieved.”

For McCullum, this win is even more satisfying as it was registered against a strong India team. “It’s great for a country with very limited resources and it’s even more satisfying to achieve it on the biggest stage against a mighty nation in world cricket,” he said.
