New Delhi: Five cases of rectal bleeding caused by cytomegalo virus (CMV) have been reported in a Delhi hospital in Kovid-19 immunocompetent patients. According to doctors, after 20 to 30 days of corona treatment, the problem of abdominal pain and bleeding in the stool of patients came to the fore.

According to the information, Kovid infection and the drugs (steroids) used for its treatment suppress the immunity of patients and make them susceptible to unusual infections. One such infection is cytomegalo virus.

According to Professor Anil Arora, Chairman, Institute of Liver Gastroenterology and Pancreaticobiliary Sciences, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, in this deadly second wave of Kovid-19, within the last 45 days, we have detected CMV in Kovid patients. Five such patients of infection have been seen.

Abdominal pain and bloody stools after 20 to 30 days of treatment

“All the patients reached Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after 20 to 30 days of treatment for COVID-19 with abdominal pain and blood in stools which is not indicative of COVID.” He added that, “None of them had There were no other immunological conditions responsible for this viral infection such as reduced immunity in patients with transplant, cancer, AIDS etc.”

CMV is usually seen in patients who have weak immunity. All patients arrived at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital with reports of ‘low lymphocyte count’ (6-10 per cent as against normal 20 to 40 per cent), indicating the presence of CMV infection.

Cases of five patients in the age group of 30-70 years from Delhi-NCR

Two of them were bleeding profusely, with one patient requiring emergency surgery on the right side of the colon. One of the patients succumbed to other complications related to Kovid. According to the doctors, the other three patients were successfully treated with antiviral therapy. Whereas, cytomegalo virus colitis was confirmed by PCR testing for CMV and tissue biopsy of the large intestine.
