- Questions were also raised on the rest given to Team India for 20 days.
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar is surprised that Virat Kohli’s team will take a three-week break ahead of the Test series against England despite losing the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand due to poor preparation. Former chief selector Vengsarkar said India did well in the last two years in the WTC cycle but their preparation for the final was not ideal.
He said, “I have enjoyed watching cricket matches in this cycle. India did very well in this round but due to poor preparation they could not do well in the final. He didn’t even play a practice match before such an important match.” Vengsarkar told PTI, “On the other hand the New Zealand match was fit. He had played two Tests (against England) before this.
The Indian players will now take a three-week sabbatical to gather on July 14 for the five-Test series against England starting on August 4. Vengsarkar is surprised by this team’s program. “I don’t know how such a program was created where you go on a break in the middle and then come back and play a Test match. A week’s rest after the WTC final was enough. You need to keep playing. I am surprised that this program has been approved.
Indian captain Virat Kohli asked the batsmen to show their intentions but Vengsarkar said there is a need to show their intentions towards preparations as well. “If he is talking about intentions, then why didn’t the team prepare properly for this match. Where were your intentions then? He should have played at least two four-day matches.
