- India beat England by 151 runs in the Lord’s Test to take a 1-0 lead in the series
- The poor performance of the host England team is being criticized all round
- Former veteran English player Geoffrey Boycott lashed out at England’s team and captain
Former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott feels England were “stupid” in their strategy in the second Test against India and let emotions take over. After starting the fifth day of the Lord’s Test in a strong position, England suffered a 151-run defeat on the back of India’s scintillating play.
During the match, the players of both the teams also got into a scuffle and India took advantage of these situations by raising the level of their game while the England team failed to do so. Former England captain Boycott wrote in his column for ‘The Telegraph’, “This Test match has proved two things. First of all, if you are an idiot then you do not deserve to win a test match. As much as we love Joe Root for his brilliant batting, the more he disappoints with his strategy.
Only those who can’t depend on the route
He said, “Second, England cannot depend on Joe (Root) alone for all their runs. The situation is now going beyond fun and the top three batsmen will have to improve very soon.” During the Indian innings, when Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were batting, England spread the field. Both these fast bowlers made an unbroken partnership of 89 runs with the bat, as England set a target of 272 runs in the fourth innings of victory.
as the bull does by looking at the red cloth
England had to bat for about 60 overs when India declared the innings. His team was bowled out for 120 runs in front of the sharp bowling of Mohammad Siraj, Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Shami. Boycott said, “Joe (Root) was doing well with his fielding decoration and captaincy but seeing Jasprit Bumrah at the crease, he started reacting like a bull does when he sees red clothes.”
He said, “He encouraged Mark Wood to hit Bumrah with fast short pitch balls. Obviously, the England captain and some of his players wanted to avenge such bowling by Bumrah against James Anderson in the first innings. Because England were trying more to hit the ball on their bodies than to get Bumrah and Shami out.
Boycott also credited India for securing this memorable win. He said, “At the start of the game, the England team was a contender for victory. I couldn’t believe England’s performance was so bad but congrats to India. You were absolutely wonderful.”
