- India tour of Sri Lanka – Hosts Sri Lanka beat India by 7 wickets in 3rd T20, won the series 2-1
- After 13 years in any format, Sri Lanka has succeeded in winning a series against India
- This proved to be Sri Lanka’s first T20 cricket series win against India.
The host Sri Lanka cricket team achieved a special achievement in Colombo on Thursday night. He defeated Team India for the first time in the T20 International series and that too when all his great and legendary players have either retired, or are out of the series. This is a big achievement for a young team because Sri Lanka has won a series against India in any format after 13 years. The last time he achieved this success was in 2008, since then Sri Lanka was only yearning against India in every format. After all, how did this young team end the drought of so many years, what are the reasons due to which the Indian team had to face this embarrassing defeat.
absence of senior players
India had won the ODI series on this Sri Lanka tour by faltering and now lost the T20 series as well. The very first reason for this is the same which was the subject of discussion from the beginning – many senior players of India were not present on this tour. Many big players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah are present in England to play Test series and it has left no stone unturned to lift Sri Lanka’s spirits.
One covid infected and the whole team was helpless
The second major reason for this defeat is Krunal Pandya being found infected with Kovid-19. He was out of the series but along with him 8 other Indian players who came in direct contact with him also could not take the field in the second and third T20 matches as they had to go into isolation. These 8 players included all the great players of the team like Hardik Pandya, Prithvi Shaw, Yuzvendra Chahal. India were left with no option, the situation was that in place of Navdeep Saini, who was injured in the second T20, a bowler (Sandeep Warrier) had to be fielded in the team who had gone to Sri Lanka to bowl only in the nets.
Five batsmen..after that the tails started coming
As told you that there were very few options in team selection, so when the team was selected for the third decider of T20, only 5 batsmen were present in it. These batsmen were Ruturaj, Dhawan, Padikkal, Sanju Samson and Nitish Rana. Rana got out after scoring 6 runs at number five and was soon followed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who is seen as a tail batsman in common days. However, Bhuvi still made 16 runs off 32 balls and Kuldeep Yadav supported him with 23 not out off 28 balls but it proved to be insufficient as Sri Lanka had already made a big dent.
Shikhar Dhawan’s lapses and decisions, everyone’s lack of Virat
Everyone realized the absence of Team India’s regular captain Virat Kohli on this Sri Lanka tour. The command of the Indian cricket team was in the hands of Shikhar Dhawan on this tour. Dhawan was captaining Team India for the first time and all his decisions showed a glimpse of being inexperienced in terms of captaincy. Ahead of the third T20 match on Thursday, when everyone was speculating that chasing the target in a pressurized situation here would be the right thing to do, Shikhar won the toss and decided to bat first. He himself was dismissed for zero in the very first over and the entire team could score only 82 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. Apart from this, Dhawan’s decisions were also seen deviating in the exchange of bowlers.
Kuldeep and Varun just kept looking at Chahar
When the Sri Lankan team came out to bat, they had a target of just 83 runs, but it was not that they started playing big shots as soon as they came. He had a very slow start which was proof that this pitch is not going to be easy for him either. When Rahul Chahar came to do his spin, he also created pressure by dropping two early wickets for 35 runs. With the Sri Lankan spinners wreaking havoc on this pitch, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakraborty needed to support Chahar in an aggressive manner, but both these bowlers failed to do so. The third wicket was also taken by Chahar who took 3 wickets for 15 runs in 4 overs. But the rest of the bowlers could not create any pressure or get wickets. Sri Lanka reached the target in 14.3 overs, which meant that anything was possible if the pressure had been built in the beginning.
