Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday that the final between India and New Zealand in Southampton last month was the most-watched match of all the World Test Championship (WTC) series. According to an ICC release, this Test match was played from June 18 to 23 and the total number of people watching the live telecast of this match in 89 regions reached 13.6 million.
This match got the most viewers from India. The match was watched by 94.6 percent of the total viewers on Star Sports and national broadcaster Doordarshan. New Zealand won the final by eight wickets on the reserve day. Apart from the globally produced English feed, Star Sports also broadcast in local languages Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
Despite New Zealand’s low population, viewership figures from there were impressive. Over two million New Zealanders stayed up all night or early in the morning to watch their team lift the coveted Test mace on Sky Sports. This was the most-watched match in the 2019-2021 WTC cycle on Sky Sports in the UK without hosts England taking part.
