  • BCCI decides to bring two new teams in IPL
  • New teams can be seen playing on the field in IPL 2022
  • However, along with this plan, there is also a challenge before the BCCI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to introduce two new teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. However, this plan of BCCI is likely to increase the concern of cricket boards of other countries. In fact, increasing the number of teams in the IPL will mean that the tournament will be extended for another 10-15 days. In such a situation, when there are more matches, there will be conflict with the schedule of Future Tours Program (FTP) of other countries. Will have to play without their IPL-bound players or they will have to decide the dates of the series keeping in mind the schedule of the tournament.

‘There will be many series in March and June 2022’

A former member of the IPL Cricket Council told IANS that there are a lot of series to be held in March and June 2022. If the number of IPL matches increases, then the tournament (usually IPL is played in April and May) can be carried forward. This should be taken care of. Explain that the Indian board will have to solve the challenge of an extended IPL on its own, as IPL is a domestic tournament, due to which the ICC will not discuss it. The board meeting of the ICC will be held on July 15.

These countries will be playing international cricket

Apart from India, players from eight other countries play in the IPL. According to the ICC’s 2018-2023 FTP, these countries will play the series in the months of March, May and June next year. Australia, Bangladesh, South Africa, India, New Zealand and Afghanistan are expected to play international cricket in March 2022 while England and New Zealand are expected to play cricket in May 2022. At the same time, Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, India and England have to play in June and July as well.

Existing FTP is up to March, 2023

Pakistan, Netherlands, Ireland and Zimbabwe would also play international cricket during that time, but their players did not enter the IPL. Players from Pakistan are banned while players from other three teams are usually not sold in IPL auctions. The current FTP program is slated for March 2023. The 50-over World Cup in India will be held in the months of February-March. In such a situation, the start of IPL 2023 in March may be stalled and the tournament may have to be extended till June.
