England head coach Chris Silverwood (Chris Silverwood) India on Tuesday said he would not pressure all-rounder Ben Stokes to return from mental health leave despite the team struggling in the ongoing Test series against India. A day after India’s 151-run loss to India in the second Test at Lord’s, Silverwood said Stokes would be given as much time as he needed to recover. Captain Joe Root also said the same before the start of the five-match series.

Chris Silverwood said, “From my point of view we are not going to ask him to come back. I don’t think you can pressurize in such cases. I will wait. We will wait for him till he himself comes and says I am ready to play.” Stokes took an indefinite leave after England’s 3-0 ODI win against Pakistan last month.

Silverwood supported Root’s assertion that no one can be pressured into something as sensitive as mental health. “There is no time limit in this. I am saying it again that it is important for us to stay healthy for Ben, his family so that he can make a strong comeback. It is important for us to get to that position when he feels mentally ready to come back and do well for England.
