New Delhi: An organization of local clerics and elders in Parachinar in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram tribal district has banned women from entering shopping centers and markets without a male companion. Speaking to ‘The Express Tribune’, local residents said that the Hussaini Tehreek organization has shared the decision on its Facebook page as well as WhatsApp and it has been widely shared by its members on all social media platforms.

“We are not living under Taliban rule,” he said. We are in Pakistan but some people have taken inspiration from the ongoing incidents in Afghanistan where women have been asked to wear shuttlecock burqa and not go out without a male partner.

The Hussain Tehreek is led by a local cleric and former senator, Maulana Abid Hussaini, who is considered an influential figure locally. He is supported by other clerics in the region. It is worth mentioning here that the residents of Kurram are believed to be the only people in the former Fata who took up arms against the Taliban and suffered great losses as a result.

Another local said, “Most of the educated people in Kurram district were against such restrictions. Not only friends but also enemies are affected by the rapid rise of Taliban in Afghanistan. But Kurram is part of Pakistan and the authorities should take action against these self-styled reformers. Another local claimed that the organization has warned that women going to markets alone will be dealt with strictly and that no one else but their husbands and family members will be responsible for this disrespect.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kurram Afaq Wazir told ‘The Express Tribune’ that it was a joke of some miscreants and also the Hussaini Tehreek in Parachinar and Kurram district is not well known to all. “It is a petty organization of around 14-15 people who are not famous. Somebody circulated this verdict but there is no such restriction on the ground and women are freely going to the markets without any hindrance. No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands. The clerics have not imposed any such restriction on women in the district and the area is completely peaceful.

Kurram is a border district located near Khost province of Afghanistan and is one of the ancient trade routes with Afghanistan.
