New Delhi: Team India’s opener Rohit Sharma recently played a powerful innings in the Lord’s Test against England, with the help of which Virat Kohli’s army defeated the hosts by 151 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series. Rohit Sharma scored 83 runs in the first innings in London. He faced the England fast bowlers brilliantly. James Anderson clean bowled Rohit and thus the Indian opener was 17 runs away from scoring his first Test century abroad.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised Rohit Sharma’s form and said that he will soon score a brilliant century against England. Gavaskar said that it is just a matter of time and Rohit Sharma will score a century in the ongoing Pataudi Trophy.

Sunil Gavaskar said in a conversation with Sony Sports, ‘In a five-day Test match, no one knows how the pitch will behave on the first day. Like is the pitch stable or will there be more bounce? For this you need to spend some time on the pitch and Rohit Sharma showed in the first innings how to do that. He did it brilliantly. Which shots to play and which not to. Just look at how many balls he has left. Some of them were very close to the off-stump. This adjustment is mental and Rohit has done it.

Gavaskar further said, ‘We expect the same from a player. If you find such a player, who guarantees to score 80 runs, then in a five-match series, he will score 400–450 runs. What more does a captain need? Yes, he will be disappointed for not scoring a century, but scoring a century at Lord’s is not everything.

The world will not end: Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar himself never scored an international century at Lord’s and this is proof that not every great batsman could score a century at this ground to get his name on the board of honors. Gavaskar pointed out that if Rohit Sharma fails to score a century at Lord’s, the world will not end for him.
