southamptonSanjay Manjrekar: Even though Sanjay Manjrekar has objection to calling Indian team’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin the greatest of all time, the former cricketer termed the off-spinner as a bowler of a high order. Ashwin, who was leading the Indian spin department in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, took the crucial wicket of opener Tom Latham.

Veteran spinner Ashwin is expected to play a key role in the rain-hit WTC final between India and New Zealand in Southampton. It may be noted that Manjrekar had highlighted Ashwin’s iconic career with his performances in military countries. Ashwin has a great record on the spin track in India. However, in the last few years, Ashwin got little chance to show his spin magic on foreign pitches.

Manjrekar said in a conversation with Cricinfo, “Ashwin is definitely a bowler of a high order, but I would say again to anyone that he is a great match winner on spin-taking wickets in India. But this is his third tour of England. He has also toured Australia thrice and South Africa twice. He hasn’t had a match-winning performance for India here. Now it’s time for Ashwin to show his match winning performance in the WTC final.

Talking about Ashwin’s performance on the third day of the ICC World Test Championship final, Manjrekar had praised the off-spinner’s innovative way of dismissing Latham. Ashwin has so far bowled 12 overs in the Test Championship final and took one wicket for 20 runs including 5 maidens. Ashwin is the highest wicket-taker in the ICC World Test Championship.

Manjrekar said, “Today’s wicket was excellent as it did not get any help from the pitch and Ashwin took wickets in a new way. In India, he takes wickets with the help of short leg and silly point. Today he took wickets like the old days, like Prasanna and Bishan Singh Bedi used to do. The batsman was tempted to play drives at covers, mid off and mid on. There was nothing for him in the pitch, but in spite of this he managed to take wickets.
