Today Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the Indian cricket team and current BCCI President, is celebrating his 49th birthday. Ganguly was born on July 8, 1972 in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Ganguly, who played international cricket for 15 years, is one of the most successful captains of India. He also did his best as a batsman. Ganguly made his ODI debut for India in 1992, but it took him four more years to begin his Test career. He made his Test debut on June 20, 1996, but did you know that Ganguly got this opportunity after a fight between two Indian players.
‘Jackpot’ because of Sidhu-Azhar
In the year 1996, the Indian team went on a tour of England after being eliminated from the World Cup semi-finals. India had to face England in three Test matches. India had lost the first Test and before the second Test opener Navjot Singh Sidhu and captain Mohammad Azharuddin had a dispute. It is said that there was a rift between the two players over some issue. Not only this, Sidhu left the series in the middle and went to India. Sidhu had accused Azhar of misbehaving. In such a situation, part of the 16-member Indian team was taken by Ganguly’s ‘jackpot’. He made his debut in the second Test. Azhar also did not play in the second Test.
Ganguly hit century in debut test
Sourav Ganguly made his Test debut at the historic Lord’s ground. He scored a century in the debut test. India did not have a good start in the match and their first wicket fell on the score of just 25. Ganguly came out to bat at number three and played with patience. He played a historic innings of 131 runs in 301 balls with the help of 20 fours. India scored 429 runs in the first innings and Ganguly returned to the pavilion with a total score of 296. This test was a draw. However, Ganguly had made it clear from the first Test that he would stay for a long time, which also proved to be true.
This record of Ganguly broken after 25 years
Ganguly’s name was held for 25 years for scoring the most runs in the debut Test at Lord’s. Recently this record was broken by New Zealand opener Devon Conway. He scored a double century on his debut against England at Lord’s. Coincidentally, the birthday of both is also on 8th July. Also both are left-handed batsmen. Apart from Conway and Ganguly, four other batsmen have also scored centuries in their debut Tests at Lord’s.
