Saint Lucia: Australia beat West Indies by 4 runs in a thrilling 4th T20I match played in St Lucia on Thursday. Australia won the toss and batted first and scored 189 runs in the allotted 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets. In reply, West Indies team could score 185 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets. Mitchell Marsh (75 runs and three wickets) was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance.
With this, Australia tasted the first win on the ongoing West Indies tour. Australia reduced the margin of loss to 1-3 in the current five T20 Internationals. The fifth and final T20 International match of the series will be played on Saturday according to the Indian calendar.
Chasing the target of 190 runs, West Indies got off to a great start with the partnership of 62 runs for the first wicket by Lendl Simmons (72) and Evin Lewis (31). Zampa gave the first blow to the hosts by bowling Lewis. After this, ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle (1) was caught by Marsh at the hands of Behrendorf and gave a big blow to the West Indies. Zampa put pressure on West Indies by bowling Andre Fletcher.
Starc shines, Allen’s innings wasted
During this, Lendl Simmons’s bat continued to explode. He scored 72 runs in just 48 balls with the help of 10 fours and two sixes. Mitchell Marsh made a strong comeback for Australia. He sent West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran (16) and Simmons to the dugout in two consecutive balls. After this, Fabian Allen made the return of the Caribbean team by scoring 29 runs in just 14 balls with the help of 2 fours and three sixes and made the match exciting. Riley Meredith got Allen caught by wicketkeeper Wade on the last ball of the 19th over.
West Indies needed 11 runs in the last over. Mitchell Starc took out the first five balls continuously and Russell could hit a six in the last over. In this way the West Indies team missed the target by 4 runs. Mitchell Marsh took 3 wickets for Australia. Adam Zampa got two wickets. A wicket came in the account of Riley Meredith.
Marsh played the best innings of his career
Earlier, after winning the toss, Australia went to bat first and made a huge score of 189 runs. Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and elected to bat first. Matthew Wade (5) returned to the dugout in the second over after being caught by wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran off Oshane Thomas.
From here Aaron Finch (53) and Mitchell Marsh (75) took over the Australian innings and made a century partnership of 114 runs for the second wicket. Walsh broke the partnership with a clean bowling to Finch. The Kangaroo captain scored his 15th T20 International fifty in just 37 balls with the help of 5 fours and three sixes.
Mitchell Marsh’s aggressive innings continued. However, he did not get good support from the other end. Alex Carey (0), Moises Henriques (6), Ashton Turner (6) were dismissed early. Mitchell Marsh scored 75 runs in just 44 balls with the help of 4 fours and 6 sixes. This was the third fifty of his T20 International career and the best score of his career. Allen ended Marsh’s innings by being caught out by Pooran.
After the dismissal of Mitchell Marsh, Dan Christian (22 *) scored a quick run in the last over to take Australia to a huge score. Cristian scored 22 not out in 14 balls with the help of two fours and a six. Hayden Walsh took the highest three wickets for West Indies. Oshane Thomas, Andre Russell and Fabian Allen got one wicket each.
