  • India tour of England 2021 – the havoc of Kovid
  • Apart from Rishabh Pant, a member of the support staff of the Indian cricket team also came under the grip of Kovid.
  • Two other players were quarantined for ten days

Ahead of next month’s Test series against England, Indian cricket team’s wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant and throwdown specialist Dayanand Jarani have tested positive for COVID-19 while two others have been kept in isolation. Wriddhiman Saha, a member of the coaching staff and reserve wicketkeeper who came in contact with Dayanand, has been kept in isolation.

All four are in London while the rest of the team will gather in Durham in the evening after a 20-day break. It takes five hours to travel from London to Durham by bus. Pant and Saha will miss the warm-up match against a combined county team from July 20. The Cricket Board of India (BCCI) source has confirmed that Pant has been kept in isolation for the last eight days. According to the source, he is not showing any symptoms at this time.

The source said, “He is in isolation at an acquaintance’s place and will not travel to Durham with the team on Thursday.” The source, however, did not say when the 23-year-old would join the team. Pant is expected to undergo a COVID-19 test in the next few days. Apart from Pant and injured Shubman Gill, the rest of the Indian team left for Durham from London on Thursday. Gill suffered a leg injury earlier this month and the young batsman has come out of the biologically safe environment of the team.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had earlier sent an e-mail to the Indian team present in the UK, warning about the increasing cases of Kovid-19 there.
The players were given a break after the World Test Championship final against New Zealand last month. India lost this match. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla told PTI on Thursday, “Yes, one player has tested positive but he is in isolation for the last eight days. He is not in any hotel with the team, so no other player was affected.

Shukla said, “So far no other player has been found positive. You will be aware that our secretary Jay Shah has written a letter to all the players asking them to follow the rules.” It is understood that Pant is infected with the delta type of the virus, due to which the cases of infection are increasing in England. He was seen at the stadium during the Euro Football Championship match last month and also posted a picture of himself on social media. After a mild fever, Pant got the test done.

In his letter, Shah had asked the players to avoid going to crowded areas as the Kovidshield vaccine administered to the players of the team can only prevent infection, it does not give full immunity against the virus. Shah had specifically written in his letter that the players should avoid going to the recently concluded Wimbledon Tennis Championships and Euro Championships here.

The Indian team has to play a five-Test series against England from August 4. The team will also play a practice match from July 20 before this. The second round of the World Test Championship will begin with this match between India and England. Recently, the England team also faced cases of corona virus infection, due to which its main team went on isolation and had to choose a new team for the limited overs series against Pakistan.
