New Delhi: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos takes off from a private launch pad in West Texas on a New Shepherd flight from his space travel company Blue Origin. He became the second billionaire after Richard Branson to fly into space and the first private citizen to fly beyond the Karman Line. Apart from Bezos, three other people accompanied him on the space journey. Amazon founder’s brother, an 18-year-old student from the Netherlands and an 82-year-old female aviation pioneer from Texas boarded the rocket. The flight took a total of 10 minutes.
The billionaire businessman flew at an altitude of about 106 kilometers on July 11, about 16 kilometers higher than Richard Branson’s flight. These capsules were fully automated, so there was no need for trained crews on the flight. Two pilots were required to operate Branson’s Virgin Galactic rocket plane.
This flight, which made Bezos’s dream come true, came after 15 successful test flights to space by the New Shepard rocket in 2015. However, there were no passengers on the earlier test flights. After this flight, Blue Origin plans to have two more passenger flights by the end of the year.
