London: Senior New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor believes the World Test Championship (WTC) title has largely removed the disappointment of the ODI World Cup two years ago. England won the title in the 2019 World Cup final on the back of a controversial decision to ‘set more boundaries’. Earlier both the 100 over match and the super over were tied.

‘WTC has paid off’

Taylor said in a virtual press conference on Wednesday, ‘I had some ups and downs early in my career. Our team lacked a bit of consistency then, but the team has consistently performed well over the years. This (WTC title) is definitely a big achievement after the disappointment of the World Cup 2019 and it has probably made up for that as well. Unbeaten knocks from Taylor and captain Kane Williamson helped New Zealand beat India by eight wickets in the final to win their first world title. Taylor scored the winning run and then came the moment he would never forget.

‘I’ll never forget to be back with Ken’

“Getting back with him (Williamson) once the winning run is scored and the discussions that followed, these are something I will never forget,” he said. Taylor said, ‘Even when I came out to bat, the situation was difficult. We batted in those difficult times and Kane is a wonderful captain and ambassador of the game for our country. He said, ‘He was there then and before that last ball he stared at me saying hurry up and finish it so that he doesn’t have to do that. So it was great to hit boundaries and celebrate the win.
