Columbus (USA): You’ll hear the term “sub-orbital” a lot when Sir Richard Branson takes off on the Virgin Galactic Company’s VSS Unity spacecraft and Jeff Bezos takes off on Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft to touch the limits of space, and some Feeling weightless for minutes. But what exactly is “suborbital”? This means that these vehicles will cross the undetermined boundary of space, but once they reach there, they will not move fast enough to stay in space.

This happens to be the horizon velocity

If a spacecraft reaches a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour or more, instead of falling to the ground, it will continue to revolve around the Earth. It will revolve in the orbit of space and that’s how satellites and moons stay above the earth. Anything that is sent into space if it does not have enough horizontal velocity to stay in space such as these rockets, they fall back to Earth and therefore fly in an orbital trajectory. Why these suborbital flights matter.

will experience weightlessness

The two spacecraft launched in July 2021 will not reach orbit but reaching space in a private spacecraft is a milestone in the history of humanity. People aboard suborbital flights will be in space for a few minutes, experience a few minutes of weightlessness, and feel like an astronaut. Theoretically, what Branson and Bezos will fly is not much different than throwing a baseball in the air. The faster you can throw the baseball, the faster it will go up and the longer it stays in the air.

example of baseball
Imagine that you are throwing a baseball in an open field. As the ball goes up, it slowly comes down again. Eventually the ball will reach the maximum height and then fall to the ground. Now imagine that if you could throw a baseball to a height of perhaps 97 kilometers, it would reach into space. But when the ball reaches its maximum height it will have zero vertical velocity and will start falling towards the earth. Spacecraft can take a few minutes, and almost all of the time the ball will experience weightlessness, similar to the one experienced by astronauts on these spacecraft. As in the fictional baseball, the astronauts will reach space but will not enter orbit so their flight will be suborbital.
