Former Indian batsman Yashpal Sharma is no more. He said goodbye to the world on Tuesday morning. Yashpal, 66, passed away due to cardiac arrest. He was a member of India’s 1983 World Cup winning team. He played international cricket for seven years. Yashpal started his international career in 1978 and played his last match in 1985. He scored 1606 runs in 37 Tests at an average of 33.46 and scored 883 runs in 42 ODIs at an average of 28.8. Yashpal scored 2 centuries and 9 half-centuries in Tests. He hit 4 fifties in ODIs.

Such was the performance in the 1983 World Cup

Yashpal Sharma had expressed his strong intentions from the very beginning of the 1983 World Cup. He played a brilliant innings in the first match against West Indies and played a key role in the team’s victory. He scored 89 runs in 120 balls for India in difficult times. Yashpal played this innings when the team was battling for 76 runs for the loss of three wickets. Not so much, at one time the team’s score was reduced to 141 runs for 5 wickets, but Yashpal stood firm. Apart from this, he scored 40 runs against Australia and 61 runs against England. He scored 240 runs in the tournament at an average of 34.28.

Yashpal Sharma was also the national selector

Yashpal’s career was not special after the World Cup. He struggled with poor form for a long time and then the card was cut from the team. He was first discharged from the Test team and later dropped from the ODI team as well. He was also a national selector. Let us tell you that Yashpal was born on 11 August 1954 in Ludhiana, Punjab.
