New Delhi: Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has revealed an incident with the great Sachin Tendulkar during his tour of India in 2007. Shoaib Akhtar tried to lift Sachin Tendulkar for fun at the award function during Pakistan’s tour of India, but he dropped the Indian batsman. Shoaib Akhtar, popularly known as Rawalpindi Express, was very scared of this.
The Pakistan team came to India in November-December 2007 to play five ODIs and three Test matches. This was the last time a bilateral test series was played between India and Pakistan. Recalling that tour, Shoaib Akhtar has narrated a funny anecdote related to Sachin Tendulkar. Akhtar said in a conversation with Sportskeeda, ‘After Pakistan, if I got the most love from any country, it is India. I have many good memories in India.
The former fast bowler further said, ‘During the 2007 tour, there was an award function. So after the function we all met each other. Like every time, I wanted to do something different. So I tried to raise Sachin Tendulkar for fun. I picked them up, but they slipped out of my hands. Tendulkar fell, not that badly, but I thought ‘I am dead’. I was scared that if Sachin Tendulkar was unfit or got hurt, I would never get a visa to India again. The people of India will never allow me to enter the country again or burn me alive.’
Very good friendship with Tendulkar: Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar said that he was a rival on the field, but off the field he has a very good friendship with Tendulkar. Regarding this incident, the fast bowler further said, ‘When Sachin fell, I really felt that my life was over. I remember Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh were also there and they were telling me – what are you doing? And I replied- I really don’t know, it just happened.’
He further said, ‘Then I went and hugged Tendulkar and asked him to be okay. Thankfully Sachin Tendulkar replied that I am fine. Then I told him that if something happens to you, it will be a big problem for me. Media and fans in India would play my band. Tendulkar thrashed us a lot later in the series. Then I felt that he should have become unfit (jokingly).’
I jumped on Yuvraj and hit Afridi’s neck: Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar admitted during this time that he used to enjoy making fun of people, which sometimes went wrong and many people got injured too.
Akhtar said, ‘Yuvraj is my best friend. One time I jumped on his back. Bhajji was there then, he had seen. I pressed Shahid Afridi’s neck. He got into trouble and dropped out. These are the stories that I remember. It’s not a good joke, but I used to do it for fun and sometimes people would get injured.
Considered one of the fastest bowlers of his time, Shoaib Akhtar represented Pakistan in 46 Tests, 163 ODIs and 15 T20 Internationals and took 444 international wickets.
